Free Film Screening: The Devils

April 17 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm KST

The Devils
In light of the most recent scandal of the sexual abuse of nuns in the Roman Catholic Church, we have dedicated this month’s screening to films that take a look into this ancient religion and its relic practices.

The Devils (1971) a British historical drama horror film directed by Ken Russell and starring Oliver Reed and Vanessa Redgrave is a critique on abuse of political power and is as relevant today as it was then. This film is the second film in our list that was banned in several countries at its release because of its staunch criticism of the catholic institution. Adapted from John Whiting’s 1960 play “The Devils” and Aldous Huxley’s 1952 novel, The Devils of Loudun the film is based on the true story of the trial of Urbain Grandier, a Catholic priest who was executed in 1634 on charges of witchcraft

Our arts film program will provide many opportunities throughout the year to view classic and contemporary films from around the world. Through screenings, scholarly notes, and local filmmaker discussions, the program encourages viewers to learn more about the history of the cinema, the role of art in films, and how films reflect society.
Programs are free of charge, but seating is on a first-come, first-seated basis. Doors open approximately 30 minutes before each show. Arrive early to purchase refreshments or snacks. Programs are subject to change.
